Questions are higher-level acts

چکیده
Questions are not on all fours with assertions or directions, but higher-level acts that can operate either to yield theoretical questions, as when one asks whether the door is closed, practical close it.

Local higher derivations on C*-algebras are higher derivations
Let $mathfrak{A}$ be a Banach algebra. We say that a sequence ${D_n}_{n=0}^infty$ of continuous operators form $mathfrak{A}$ into $mathfrak{A}$ is a textit{local higher derivation} if to each $ainmathfrak{A}$ there corresponds a continuous higher derivation ${d_{a,n}}_{n=0}^infty$ such that $D_n(a)=d_{a,n}(a)$ for each non-negative integer $n$. We show that if $mathfrak{A}$ is a $C^*$-algebra t...
متن کاملSpeech acts in (inter)action: Repeated questions*
Social actions performed through language are the focal object of research on speech act realization (speech act research,1 for short) and conversation analysis, among other approaches to discourse that I will not consider here. Yet because of their di¤erent disciplinary origins and histories, the two approaches are interested in di¤erent aspects of social action mediated through language and, ...
متن کاملKnowledge-Level Speech Acts
In this paper we try to answer the following questions: Is it possible to program solely at the level of an agent communication language? If this is the case, ii) what requirements and conditions need to be taken into account? We argue that, although a number of languages defining abstract communication primitives have been proposed in the past few years, knowledge-level programming can only be...
متن کاملHow robust are probabilistic models of higher-level cognition?
An increasingly popular theory holds that the mind should be viewed as a near-optimal or rational engine of probabilistic inference, in domains as diverse as word learning, pragmatics, naive physics, and predictions of the future. We argue that this view, often identified with Bayesian models of inference, is markedly less promising than widely believed, and is undermined by post hoc practices ...
متن کاملConcealed Questions Are Structured
Questions in natural language typically consist of a proposition articulated into a foreground part, which evokes a set of alternatives, and a background part, which provides a function for distinguishing among those alternatives. For instance, the question Who left? asks which of the people that who quantifies over (the foreground) have the property of leaving (the background). Concealed quest...
